Opportunity Information: Apply for EDITING 202106
The Institutes for Historical Editing grant is a National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) funding opportunity, administered through the National Archives and Records Administration, that supports the creation and delivery of training programs for historical documentary editors. The central purpose is workforce development in documentary editing with a strong emphasis on expanding both the number and the diversity of people entering and advancing in the field, particularly Black, Indigenous, and People of Color who are new to documentary editing. The program is also designed to spread up-to-date knowledge about documentary editing and to strengthen participants capacity to become leaders, whether they go on to run editorial projects directly or contribute through adjacent areas like digital history and the digital humanities.
Funded projects must include two connected components: a Basic Institute and an Advanced Institute. The Basic Institute is meant to introduce participants to digital documentary editing, especially those who may be unfamiliar with editorial standards, current edition-making workflows, or the digital tools commonly used in the field. The Advanced Institute is aimed at more experienced editors and is framed as leadership development, focusing on helping participants learn how to conceive, design, manage, and sustain new and innovative historical edition projects that move documentary editing forward in the 21st century. Applicants can structure these institutes to run back-to-back over a defined set of days, or they can separate them, and they may offer one or both multiple times for different audiences. The format is flexible: institutes may be conducted in-person, virtually, or as a mix, depending on what best supports learning goals and participant access.
A required element across both the Basic and Advanced Institutes is intentional outreach and inclusion of underrepresented groups, including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, not only among attendees but also within the faculty or instructional team. The funded organization is responsible for the full lifecycle of the program, including curriculum design and development, recruitment and selection of attendees, instruction, and overall program administration. Applicants are also expected to follow NHPRC rules on allowable and unallowable costs, as outlined in the Commissions guidance on what it does and does not fund.
Funding is available for a project period of one to three years, with an award ceiling of up to $275,000, and the Commission anticipated making one award in this category. The project start date was expected to be no earlier than January 1, 2022. The NHPRC also requires public acknowledgment of its support in publications, publicity, and other products produced with grant assistance.
Eligible applicants include U.S. nonprofit organizations and institutions, U.S. colleges and universities (public or private), state and local government agencies, and federally acknowledged or state-recognized Native American tribes or groups. Individuals cannot apply for personal training or professional advancement under this program; those applications are explicitly ineligible and will not be reviewed. Applicants must also comply with federal grant administration requirements, including registering in the System for Award Management (SAM), maintaining an active SAM registration throughout the process, and including a valid DUNS number in the application.
On budgeting, the Commission may fund up to 100 percent of direct project costs (excluding program revenue), and cost sharing can include program revenue, indirect costs contributed by the grantee, or additional direct costs covered by the applicant. However, NHPRC funds cannot be used to pay indirect costs, consistent with federal regulations noted in the opportunity (2 CFR 2600.101). Key administrative details include the opportunity number (EDITING 202106), CFDA 89.003, a discretionary grant instrument, and the original closing date listed as June 9, 2021.Apply for EDITING 202106
